Our Work

Veracode Dashboard Revamp

Key Challenge

The main challenge was crafting data visualization displays that enhanced users' ability to glean insights, a skill not commonly found in most UX teams. This project required a nuanced understanding of Veracode’s users and their interaction with data, coupled with expert data visualization techniques.

Client Profile

Veracode

Software security

As a leader in software security, Veracode offers tools for automated security checks within software applications. Their products are vital for software vendors to identify and address security vulnerabilities.

3Leaf's Approach

Initial Assessment

Our initial step was to identify target personas for the dashboards, understand their job performance needs, and the decisions they make with the data. Utilizing existing persona documents crafted by Veracode’s skilled UX team, we gained a foundational understanding of the users.

Strategy Development

We embarked on weekly rounds of designing data visualization sketches and wireframes, iteratively refining these designs based on feedback from Veracode's internal team and target users. A significant innovation during this project was the development of the “metrics ideation” method, which extracted specific data visualization needs from qualitative interview data.

Design and Implementation

The design process revolved around reorienting the dashboards from dataset-focused to persona-focused. This approach resulted in reducing the number of dashboards, each tailored to the unique decision-making needs of the identified personas. Collaborating closely with Veracode’s data science and development teams, we utilized Looker (now part of Google) to build the visualizations.

Outcome and Results

Before and After Comparison

The transformation led to a significant reduction in the number of dashboards, streamlining them to focus more on user personas rather than just datasets. This shift markedly improved the usability and relevance of the dashboards for Veracode's clients.

Client Testimonial

Veracode expressed enthusiasm for the new dashboards, noting their strategic impact in communicating value to their customers. While specific metrics on user performance enhancement post-implementation were not available, the feedback suggested that the dashboards greatly assisted users in their roles.

Lessons Learned

Challenges Overcome

One of the unique challenges was addressing data visualization, a skill less common in UX teams. Additionally, adapting our designs to cater to the InfoSec field added a layer of complexity. Our team’s ability to learn quickly and adapt to these new demands was crucial to the project’s success.

Insights Gained

Working with Veracode's highly talented team was a mutually beneficial experience, deepening our understanding of the InfoSec field, adding valuable expertise to our repertoire.

Conclusion

The project culminated in 3Leaf delivering a set of streamlined, user-focused dashboards, transforming how Veracode communicates value to their customers. The collaboration with Veracode was highly productive, resulting in a lasting positive relationship.

The revamped dashboards set a new standard for Veracode in user engagement and data presentation. This successful collaboration has positioned both Veracode and 3Leaf for future advancements in user-centric design and data visualization within the software security domain.
